Maarit Rossi, who was among 10 finalists nominated to the Global Teacher Award in 2016 by the British Varkey Foundation, has come together with teacher and students in the Bahcesehir University in Istanbul.
Ms. Rossi, who has stated that models, which were used 100 years ago, are still being used in teaching mathematics, said that “memorization should be left aside and students should be able to solve daily life problems through mathematics”. Finnish mathematician Rossi additionally said that:
"In mathematics, models, which were used 100 years ago, are still used in many countries. Society is changing; life outside schools is becoming different. However, we still use the same models in mathematics. What's happening in the end? Students are either bored in mathematics or are starting to get scared. Students should learn the language and concepts of this field and develop their skills in teaching mathematics. For this, we have to use active learning with theory at equal rates. One of these two matters comes to the forefront from time to time. However those mentioned have to go together. Instead of memorizing we should provide our students with mathematics education based on understanding and using. "
EACH STUDENT SHOULD GAIN THESE SKILLS
Director of BAUSTEM Center and Lecturer of Faculty of Educational Sciences in the Bahçeşehir University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sencer Corlu remarked that each student has the right to learn mathematics. The academician who says that mathematics is equivalent to the art for some students said that "A minority can gain math skills in Turkey. However, everybody has this right. Every student should gain and use these skills.
